I'm trying to resuscitate my old Westerbeke genset (Perkins 4-107 with
an Onan generator section). I'm replacing all the starting circuit
cables, as they've suffering a fair dose of voltage drop, and the ground
connection to the motor frame is literally smoking when I crank for 10
seconds or more.
I'm trying, though, to determine the cranking state of the motor
(whether the bearings are still bearing, and all that), and was
wondering if I can hand-crank it. With the low voltage, the motor
barely turns when I throw the start switch and, of course, the question
is low voltage or seized bearings?
I'm asking because on my old sailing auxiliary Yanmar, there was a lever
on top that relieved the compression to allow for easy hand-cranking. I
see no such equivalent on the Perkins. Is there a way to hand-crank the
motor without compression resistance to determine the state of the
bearings?
Thanks.
