I would like to learn from other people's experience with email en route....

We used the laptop and cell phone route and it worked well - when it
worked.  Our only problem was that we had the wrong carrier.  Sprint gave
good coverage up the east coast, but stopped working in Canada and most of
the way down the rivers.  Worked again along the Gulf coast.  I've heard
that other carriers have coverage through those areas so check closely
before contracting for service.  Our Sprint phone would still work in
Canada, but it was something like $1/minute which was too much to countenance.

All through Canada there are local libraries where you can check your mail
if you set it up to be able to do so from a web browser as well as from
your own laptop.  Coming down the rivers we also found occasional places
where they supplied a phone connection for a laptop.

Good luck....
