I've heard that other carriers have coverage through those areas so check closely before contracting for service. Our Sprint phone would still work in Canada, but it was something like $1/minute which was too much to countenance. All through Canada there are local libraries where you can check your mail if you set it up to be able to do so from a web browser as well as from your own laptop. Coming down the rivers we also found occasional places where they supplied a phone connection for a laptop. Good luck.... Bill
