Dear Colleagues,
As you perhaps know, the society was required to incorporate in order to
have a tax ID to be paid by JSTOR and Project MUSE. We slowly are coming
to terms with this change. First, we have more money, and second, we now
have the responsibilities of being a non-profit corporation. With money,
we can organize more activities beyond the publishing of the journal. But
an abstract "we" does not organize: actual people do. Thus the members of
the corporation (72 in all) approved changing the bylaws to create two new
officers: a president who will be tasked with planning ways to spend
money, and a secretary (split off from the treasurer) who will have the
responsibilities of making sure that we follow our bylaws (more or less) in
our activities. We therefore need volunteers willing to serve as
candidates for these new positions (which are elected by the board). If
you are interested, please let us know. We certainly should discuss this
during the meeting at the AAS, for those of you who will be able to attend.
Another major change that comes with being a corporation is the nature of
membership in the society. At present, with membership being equaled to
subscribing to the journal, we have a dismal count of 72 members. It may
be that many people have access to the journal through their university and
thus do not subscribe. We have created a PDF form that is specifically a
MEMBERSHIP form. If you are coming to the lunch meeting of the society, we
hope that you will fill it out and bring your checkbook to update your
membership.
I hope the weather does not deter you from getting to Toronto.
See you soon.
Michael
