Here is a company that is making running lights from LEDs. No commercial
connection, but they're right down the road from me.

Right now, they only have a Red/Green bow light, but are designing more
types. The only caveat from their web site: "Our first product, the bicolor
bow light is currently being tested by an independent laboratory for Coast
Guard Approval." I don't think the USCG actually approves individual lights,
but the lab they refer to is probably doing an independent test to make sure
it meets the requirements.

I have been looking for an LED anchor light (which makes more sense on a
trawler than an LED running light because your engine will be generating
juice anyway). The winner (which I have on order -- a report will follow) is:

About $115.00 shipped by air. It has two mile visibility and turns itself
on and off automatically. The very best news here is that it draws 120 mA
and has an advertised life of 100,000 hours. It should pay for itself in
light bulbs.
Best,

The Australian automatic anchor light looks great. However, the title says
"LED Running Lights" and I know that Perkins markets the red and green as a
pair for around $93.00 last time I looked. Maybe others by now.

That looks great, Steve. Be sure & let us know what you think after you
install it. The Aqua Signal light that I have (and a lot of us have, I
think) is 25 watt so it draws 2 full amps. Add to that that I forget to turn
it off untill sometime the next afternoon & it uses a lot of amp-hours.

Let's see: 100,000 hours. Say we need an anchor light for 12 hours per
day. That
gives us more than 8,000 nights at anchor. That's about 22 years anchoring
out every
night.
I should be so lucky !

This site has a number of LED replacement bulb configurations at very low
prices.
No association.

I have not put on the top of the mast yet, but I hooked it up to twelve
volts, and put it on top of the pilot house. It works automatically,
turning itself on and off at dusk and dawn. I walked to the top of the
dock and it appears to be quite bright, with a very white, almost
florescent sort of light, that I am sure would be good for finding your own
boat in a harbor full of yellowish anchor lights.
It is all hermetically sealed with the leds and electronics enclosed in a
purpose built lens. The power cable is about four feet long with nice,
thick, hiqh quality tinned wires. The only downside is that it the fixture
is fairly wide and one might have difficulty mounting it on a mast designed
for a smaller, standard fixture. All in all, I recommend it for its very
low power consumption (1.2 Amps for 10 hours of operation) and automatic
operation. I think it better to have a sealed unit such as this this
rather than a bulb which will develop corrosion at the base and contacts.
All in all, highly recommended.
Steve
Usual disclaimers. I am not in the anchor light business.

Just curious... did you get yours with any flash characteristics? They
recommend "256 IALA" on their site, but I have no idea what that is. I
thought anchor lights were required to be steady white...
