Know that we spend substantial effort to establish fair, reasonable rules, collect information, and calculate and communicate results. If you're so inclined, please thank them for their efforts on behalf of racers at NBC

That said any errors are solely my responsibility as Cruising Fleet Scorer.

Happy, of course, to respond to questions, complaints, concerns, comments, criticism, and compliments. .

Guy Moulton Regatta (corrections) -- Multiple Races: Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker Divisions

Your Fleet scorer mis-interpreted the race information provided by the GM Regatta Race Committee, and initially reported all races and racers in a single division (Non-Spinnaker). That's now been cleared up: races and racers in two division -- Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker.. The regatta completed a total of three (3) Non-Spinnaker races and two (2) Spinnaker races. These races counted for three competitions:1. Guy Moulton Trophy (awarded across all NBC fleets to the "best" NBC-member skipper of the regatta): congratulations to Sonar skipper Rick Doerr!
2. Guy Moulton Regatta Cruising PHRF Fleet Awards (see final results below at (A))
3. 2019 Cruising Fleet Series: Fleet Champ, Sunday/Regatta Spinnaker, and Sunday/Regatta Non-Spinnaker (see results included at (B) below)

Note, for the two Guy Moulton competitions we excluded non-member skippered boats (scored as if such boats did not race), but for the Cruising Fleet Series, such boats are included in the race results (in this case our Shattemuc colleague Zoom -- currently 1st in the Sunday/Regatta Non-Spinnaker Series standings). Race results below with and without non-member boats, as appropriate::

A) 2019 Guy Moulton Regatta Results -- Handicap (PHRF) Racers -- Non-Spinnaker and Spinnaker Divisions

(Please note, Sheba took 3rd place in the Non-Spinnaker division just by registering, starting an abandoned race, and then not completing a single race! Worth the $25 regatta fee?)

Scoring Rules Discussion

If you've gotten this far, you may be sufficiently curious about our scoring to want to know more (others stop here!) (link to 2019 Scoring Rules Rev 1.2)

  • Wednesday Night races: Cruising Fleet members race separately from PHRF boats in the Open Fleet. Cruising Fleet races in two divisions: Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker. Even if the RC provides a common start and course for the Cruising Non-Spin and Open fleets, these are scored as two separate races. For a race to count in our series there must be two Cruising Fleet starters in the race, and one must finish .
  • Regular Sunday races are treated the same -- races are only Cruising Fleet against Cruising Fleet, and must have two fleet starters and one fleet finisher to count. So if there are only two boats on the line for a Sunday race, and only one is a Cruising Fleet member, they may race, but the fleet member will not be credited for the race results in our series.
  • For all regattas (club regattas or HRYRA regattas) that have a distinct registration process, we score results based on all competitors in a race. Regatta races are classed as either Spinnaker or Non-Spinnaker, and results included in the series accordingly. For example, if there are three Spinnaker divisions in a HRYRA race, racing in any one will count as a Spinnaker race in our series.
  • If a boat joins the Cruising Fleet mid-season, all future races plus those races held in the 7 days immediately prior to their dues payment are credited for calculating their series standings. (Note to new racers and racing non-members -- there are lots of Wednesday Sunday and Regatta races still to come, especially if you race in the Aug/Sept/Oct HRYRA regattas -- join now and you have ample opportunity to win a Cruising Fleet award!).
  • The Fleet Champ series is only open to NBC club members, but the race results used to compute the standing are the same results used for the Wednesday and Sunday/Regatta series (these results may include other skippers who are not club or fleet members: if so, the Cox-Sprague scores reflect their finish places and they are included in the number of competitors/starter for each race counted).
  • For both the Sunday/Regatta division series and the Fleet Champ series we use Cox-Sprague to determine the boat with the best average finishing place when that boat races, with competition in larger fields of competitors given greater weight (so a 3rd place out of 5 is worth more than a 1st place out of 2). Our scoring formula has a bias towards those who participate in more races, and each series has a minimum number of races to qualify (Sunday/Regatta -- minimum of 10 Sunday or Regatta races in division, Fleet Champ -- minimum of 20 races, any division, Wednesday, Sunday or Regatta). And, if you Race Patrol or Race Committee and could not participate in a fleet race, your race duty counts towards your minimum.
  • Yes, the Fleet Champ is calculated and awarded across ALL your Cruising Fleet races in ANY division. We have a number of boats that race in both Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker races depending on the field of competitors. So, Wednesday Spinnaker racers, if you have a smaller weekend crew, you can race Sundays/Regattas Non-Spinnaker and compete for the Fleet Champ award based on your overall record.

That's all folks!
