Hi All,
After my posting at the end of January about woodpeckers working on hemlocks
on Healey Lake Rd. I had 3 e-mails from others who went out to look as well.
All three saw at least one black-backed woodpecker. One couple found two.
Yesterday I tried again after a snowfall and found three trees that had been
worked on. (There were bark chips on top of the fresh snow.) I found one
male at km 14.2
Take Muskoka Rd 11/Mactier Rd. from Hwy 169/400Extension and drive to Healey
Lake Rd. Zero your trip meter and drive out about 9 km. You will begin to
see hemlocks that have woodpecker evidence. I found three locations that
had bark chips on top of the snow but just the one bird.
