I am ready to tackle the replacement of my current battery setup. I have 4
8-d batteries. It appears that one is for the generator ( an old Onan 6kw) 1
is the house battery and the others are for starting. They sit between the
two perkins 6354 na's in a box below the engine level. The Onan sits aft of
the batteries midline in the engine room. I am looking for recommendations
based on my engines of what I really need for starting batteries both for the
perkins and the onan. I am planning on getting some Trojan GC batteries for
the house bank. I need this to fit basically in the same foot print of the
current batteries. Any thoughts/ reccomendations.

Kim you could make much better use of the existing "floor space".
Although you have twin engines it is posibel to share one start battery for
both.
Just don't try to start both engines simultaneously. < smil>
Your genset can get along with an OPTIMA round top type battery of much
smaler size. I have seen these round tops used to start big six cylinder
Cummings in diesel pusher RV. Given the small size I'm pretty sure you can
tuck such a battery away in a corner.
The Trojan GC would be good for a house bank. And depending on vertical
clearance you an go for 105, 305, or L-16 sizes.

Golf carts are the best bang for your buck in my opinion. 8d's are extremy
heavy and hard to deal with.
I am sure some will dissagree with this, but I have 8 golf carts that i use
for starting/house bank and even down at 11.8 volts after using 50% of the
battery power the engines turn right over and start. My inverter is set to
shut down at 11.8 volts, so i cant totally drain the batteries dead.
I have an isolated start battery for the gen set, so worst case if the golf
carts went totally bad i can still get the engines started to go home.

a dual-purpose battery which can serve as a starting battery. Neither I nor
Optima have any clue what the Yellow Tops are for! All retain a charge
astonishingly well, but, owing to their small size are not suitable (IMHO)
for a house bank which requires the batteries recommended by Arild or their
expensive AGM 6V equivalents.

If you go to the Optima web site you'll see that the blue top comes in
either a starting version (34M), which is just like the red top except
for the terminals, and a dual purpose version (D34M), which has slightly
more AH capacity and puts out slightly less CCA. The D31M size is
bigger, and has more cranking power and more AH capacity. Here's the

I had a pair of Optima 34M blue tops for starting my 260hp Volvo
diesel. They performed admirably for eight years. Last fall I replaced
them with Deka Intimidator starting AGM's, which are slightly more
robust, weighing about 3 pounds more each (41 vs 38 or so) and are
considerably less expensive, especially at an industrial battery supplier.

I must confess I had not kept up with all the brand names. I did use the
original Gates Cyclon cylindrical batteries. Optima is the commercial
