Howdy,
I am new to the "list", and I'm sure this topic has been disussed many times before.
I am getting ready to purchase a chartplotter and wondering what you all recommend.
We are from upstate NY and will be cruising the ICW south.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi William,

What size and/or budget are you thinking of?  Not knowing the amount of room at
your helm station makes it a bit tough to suggest anything in particular.
Garmin, Raymarine, and Furuno all make excellent units.  Simrad is very good but
seems pricey.  There's a good review in the latest Powerboat Reports.

What do you want it to interface with, or what other function in addition to
standalone chartplotter do you want it to have?  When you start integrating with
radar or other things the choices get more complicated.

If you want an excellent chartplotter, which can also be a fishfinder if you
like, but is not top-of-the line pricey, I sure like Garmin and its Blue Charts.
Mine's a 2006C (still available for $1500, I think).  Their 2010C is identical
except for its larger screen.

In addition to the screen, try the software and whether the trackball or
touchpad operate to your liking. You also have to choose the brand of chart
cartridge you like and see if the unit that you like uses them.

indeed hard to reply without additional info but i have a 2006c and love
it... very easy to use, intuitive interface (never had to open the manual),
big bright screen, detailed charts. As a bonus, you can hook up PC and use
that as a second station for free.
