An Evening of Opera Scenes, including nine scenes from famous operas and operettas, will be held at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5, in Schneebeck Concert Hall. Dawn Padula, director of vocal studies, will direct the performance, with piano accompaniment by Denes Van Parys. Ticket information is below. “Audiences will be entertained by a good deal of musical variety and excellent comedic and dramatic performances by our students,” Padula said. “The musical styles run the gamut from the classical era all the way to the present day. There is a little bit of everything, including some dancing and a little magic.” The nine scenes will come from Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute; Wolfgang Mozart), Die Fledermaus (The Bat; Johann Strauss), Le Comte Ory (The Count Ory; Gioachino Rossini), The Merry Widow (Franz Lehár), Little Women (Mark Adamo), The Consul (Gian Carlo Menotti), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Benjamin Britten), and Candide (Leonard Bernstein). All of the scenes will be sung in their original languages (with English supertitles), including German and French, with the exception of the two operettas, The Merry Widow and Die Fledermaus, which will be sung in their English translations. Following the custom of collegiate opera scenes programs across the country, the students will mostly wear formal attire, with costume pieces and accessories added as appropriate. Student vocalists in the School of Music audition for the individual roles in these performances, in addition to handling the demanding auditions initially required for acceptance into the school. Students can study for a Bachelor of Music degree in performance, in music education, or with a business elective. Others pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major or minor in music. Many Puget Sound music graduates continue their studies in graduate school, including at some of the most prestigious institutions in the country. Puget Sound is one of only a few national liberal arts colleges in the United States to offer a comprehensive School of Music or conservatory-caliber program, and is the only such liberal arts college in the Pacific Northwest.
