Kingston Area Birds 5 October 2024 – 11 October 2024

Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintain records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their
sightings with ‘Kingston FN’. Alternatively, please email  records directly
to me – contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require
review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise. Species in bold type
require completion of a rare bird report available on the KFN website or
directly from me. If indicated, an OBRC report may be required instead (
http://www.ofo.ca/site/Obrcreport). Some iPhone users report that bold type
may be replaced by asterisks.

Overview: It was a great week this week for migration.  The waterfowl
numbers continue to increase as the cooler weather sets in.  There was
still a few shorebirds on the move this week as well.  Winter finches are
starting to show up in the area, a trend which may continue as the
temperature continues to drop.

*Parish Notes:  *The only upside to the devastating weather which has been
hitting the Southeastern United States is that we may see some rare birds
pushed off course because of the weather.  Keep your eyes open along the
St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario areas for any rare birds.

Please note the new email address at the bottom of the report that can be
used to submit observations if you are not using eBird.

Please note that you must be a card-carrying member of Kingston Field

on a regular basis at Amherstview and those without are being evicted. KFN
members wishing to enter the Invista property must enter through the west
gate and show their membership card to security.

As always, a big thank you goes to all those who have submitted sightings
directly or via eBird.

The waterfowl numbers continue to increase as the cooler weather sets in. There was still a few shorebirds on the move this week as well. Winter finches are starting to show up in the area, a trend which may continue as the temperature continues to drop. *Parish Notes: *The only upside to the devastating weather which has been hitting the Southeastern United States is that we may see some rare birds pushed off course because of the weather. Keep your eyes open along the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario areas for any rare birds. *Please note the new email address at the bottom of the report that can be used to submit observations if you are not using eBird.* *Kingston List* SNOW X CANADA GOOSE – 1 bird was reported from Cataraqui Bay on Oct. 7 SNOW GOOSE – 1 bird was seen in Chaumont, NY (JC) on Oct. 5; 2 were seen on Amherst Island-Long Point Road (L&A) on Oct. 5; 1 was seen at MacDonald Memorial Park on Oct. 8 BRANT – 60 birds were seen on Amherst Island (L&A) on Oct. 10 TRUMPETER SWAN – 7 birds were seen at the Millburn Creek NCC Property on Oct. 5; 2 were seen on Florida Road on Oct. 5, 3 on Oct. 9; 2 were seen at Hwy 401/County Road 4 (L&A) on Oct. 6; 2 were seen near Legge (L&G) on Oct. 7; 2 were seen at the Amherstview Sewage Lagoon (L&A) on Oct. 8; 2 were seen on the K&P Trail-Sydenham Road to McIvor on Oct. 9, 2 on Oct. 10; 2 were seen at the Resource Road Pond on Oct. 11; 1 was seen at Perch Lake WMU, NY (JC) on Oct. 11 WOOD DUCK – 10 birds were seen at 104 Hardwood Lane on Oct. 5, 1 on Oct. 7; 2 were seen at the Millburn Creek NCC Property on Oct. 5; 16 were seen at Little Cataraqui Creek CA on Oct. 5, 6 on Oct. 6; 3 were seen on Florida Road on Oct. 5; 4 were seen in Hay Bay (L&A) on Oct. 5; 4 were seen on Thorpe Road (L&A) on Oct. 5; 4 were seen at Grays Beach Lookout (L&G) on Oct. 5; 4 were seen at Norway Lake on Oct. 6; 4 were seen at the Amherstview Sewage Lagoons (L&A) on Oct. 8, 6 on Oct. 9; 11 were seen at Legges Creek (L&G) on Oct. 9; 1 was seen at Bath-Hydro Generating Station (L&A) on Oct. 10 BLUE-WINGED TEAL – 15 birds were seen at the Millburn NCC Property on Oct. 5; 10 were seen on the K&P Trail-McIvor Road to Burbrook on Oct. 6, 1 on Oct. 7, 15 on Oct. 8, 6 on Oct. 9, 10 on Oct. 10; 10 were seen at The Amherstview Sewage Lagoons (L&A) on Oct. 6, 4 on Oct. 9; 2 were seen in Bath-Hydro Generating Station (L&A) on Oct. 10 NORTHERN SHOVELER – 1 bird was seen in Elevator Bay on Oct. 5; 1 was seen on Amherst Island-Martin Edwards Reserve (L&A) on Oct. 6; 6 were seen at The Amherstview Sewage Lagoons (L&A) on Oct. 6 GADWALL – Very plentiful throughout the Kingston Circle this week.
