Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsWe did Cape May to Manasquan last summer and had no problems with depth
(we draw 4 ft.) as long as you are in the channel. 2 inches outside the
channel is shallow mud, especially north of AC. The flies north of AC
were the worst I have ever seen.
There is a nice anchoring area in Silver Bay just north of Toms River.
We did Cape May to there in one shot.....long day.

I plan to do the New Jersey ICW in late May of 07, I draw 4.5 feet.

Outside the ICW in New Jersey there are some mud areas and some HARD SAND
areas. Dont assume it will be mud because you wont know which it will be.
The "flies" you referred to are called "Green Heads" by the localities in
South Jersey. The best known repellant is SKIN SO SOFT by Avon. Its even
being sold in tackle stores in New Jersey ! Also, before the 4th of July we
dont see may green heads. They really come out once the hot summer comes on
us, then they die off after Labor Day.
Green Heads will bite hard AND DRAW BLOOD! They tend to get in the areas of
the boat that block the wind, like down low where your feet are.

Just an observation: Greenhead, Black, Dog, Horse, Deer and probably
a host of other biting flies are attracted to dark colors. My wife
usually wears white socks, I usually wear black socks. I get bitten
until I change to white socks. Then, virtually no bites! We both use
Skin So Soft (SSS), but the flies bite right through the black socks,
even with SSS.
YMMV.
Take care and be safe.

Add to your list Black Flies in Canada.
When you have been bitten by flies, bees, wasps, and mosquitos one of
the best remedies is called After Bite which is available in most
drug stores.
If you come into contact with jelly fish, man of war, etc. Adolfs
meat tenderizer or ammonia works fairly well.
