emergency tiller

Thank-you Dennis for your response.
You reinforce my feeling on emergency tiller: I could not see myself sitting on the step of the aft boarding platform trying to steer the boat while someone else is giving me order from the helm....I think I'd rather struggle steering with 2 engines comfortably sitting at the helm.
Anyway, I have 2 hydraulic gear pumps, a manual hydraulic pump at the helm. The only thing that can fail is the hydraulic lines, and I plan to carry a lot of spares.
Thank-you Gene, look like you have a great set-up.
Jean Pierre.

Malcom Tennant had in his specs for DOMINO provision for an emergency tiller. To which I have a few questions I hope some of you can answer:
How realistic is it to turn a 24T catamaran with a manual tiller with a 5 foot arm?
Has anyone used a manual emergency tiller, and in what condition?
Has anybody regretted not having one?
Is 20 degrees deflection enough?

I do not have an emergency tiller on Wild Wind IV.  The USCG does not require
a jury tiller on passenger vessels as long as there are two engines. If the
steering would fail on a long trip it would keep you busy keeping the boat
straight on the engines alone, but you would get to your destination. I steer
with the engines alone in tight spaces for docking anyway. If you put a jury
tiller on one side, and if the connection between the rudders is not other
than hydraulic you would only steer one rudder. This would not be a problem as
I proved on my last trip when I aligned the rudders and forgot to change the
bypass valve back. If you had a steering failure and also lost an engine then
it may be a problem. The rudder connection then could be critical depending on
which side you put the tiller.

If a jury tiller was fitted the rudder angle would not need to be large. As
you can tell I have run these things through my mind and decided go without a
jury tiller.
I think it is a personal choice and how you feel about your own ability to fix
things under way.

Good luck Jean-Pierre,

Dennis

Jean-Pierre:

On our boat Amity we were wire from the wheel house to the engine room and
hydraulic from there to the rudders. We had manual backups to all our wire
systems. As for the steering we had located adjacent to the rudder a
hydraulic help pump with a removable wheel. Engaging the system involved turning a
few valves and attaching the wheel to the pump. The system was located in our
dive-sport room where communication with the bridge was by phone or radio.
