I forgot to add: Be sure you specifiy the height of your new hardtop. If you
current height is a bit cramped, and you'll be reusing a soft top frame, you
likey can adjust it up a few inches for more headroom..I did that...but you'll
need new enclosure curtains or an additional few inches sewn on either the top
or bottom to existing ones....Otherwise, with a new support fram, specifiy
tghe headroom you'd like...a few inches will not change the profile...a foot
change,though, might look pretty funny.
Plan soft side curtains most often opened so bottoms can be buttoned to the
underside of the hardtop for opening...not rolled..it is faster and never
scratches the clear vinyl/strataglass and EZ2CY doesn't roll anyway...
I had a local fiberglass fabrication shop make a hardtop
for my boat one year ago. They built a female one-off mold
and created a balsa cored top. It fits the existing aluminum
"salt shaker" or "T-Top" framing perfectly. It is beautifully
smooth and fair. On my 32, the weight is certainly un-detectable.
It cost about twice as much as new canvas, so I think it was
very reasonable.
It is not only practical and durable, it has also provided a
new fun aspect to my boat: additional space for sun lounging,
and a great diving platform.
Also, the hard top allows me to use the overhead space as
storage -- I added some straps to hold life
jackets against the top. Its the right place for them, everyone
knows where they are, but they are still out of the way and they
stay clean.

Can anyone in SE give us an update on Verizon coverage. Voice? Data?
Broadband? I understand that Verizon has a new arrangement with ACS (the
local cell phone provider.) ACS has great coverage and was expanding
significantly last summer.
Almost any coverage would beat the current problems with Globalstar.
Thank you in advance.

I can't speak for Verizon, but when I was at Pacific Marine Expo, I
found a great Iridium plan for NW cruisers. For $198 dollars you can
get 200 minutes good only in Alaska and Canada. These minutes are
valid for six months and roll over.

I don't have any experience with Verizon in SE, but last summer I was
pleasantly surprised with the voice coverage provided for my Cingular
GSM phone.
Near any sizable town it worked well, and in several different places
quite a ways from any sizable town. Right in the middle of the Dixon
entrance, for instance, some 10 miles NE of Meyers Chuck, not far from
Point Adolphus, and several other pretty remote places I don't recall
precisely.

That is pretty clever of Iridium to offer a Canada/Alaska plan since the
Globalstar satellites in the PNW are broken. Not a bad deal.
I finally got Globalstar to be frank about their problems at Pacific Marine
Expo. When I had called customer service (since last May) they would say
that they were "rearranging the constellation" or "providing a new gateway"
to improve the service very soon. Anything but "broken." I asked at the
show why they had not been forthright with me over the last 6 months (they
also blamed our equipment) and I was told that they probably did not want to
say because they were in the middle of an IPO. An IPO with broken
satellites! Sheeesh....can anyone spell S-E-C action?
Oh sure, they promised to launch new rockets soon and make it better than
ever and they said they would credit some minutes. When, where, how,
why....they cannot say.
If we can get good enough coverage with Verizon in SE Alaska we are going to
have some Globalstar equipment for sale cheap. My advice....don't buy the
stock!

We had been using AT& T in Alaska and a $20 fee per month for Canada calling
until last winter. We were super happy with it. Unfortunately this good
thing didn't last. Cingular bought them out and promptly discontinued their
$20 Canada calling plan. The went to something like a North America plan
which is spendy and had a 69 cents cost per minute tacked on too. Plus their
customer service really stunk when dealing with this old AT&T customer.
We went to Verizon which has excellent coverage off Cape Flattery where we
spend a lot of time in the early spring and late fall. Verizon also had a
North America plan with a cost per minute in Canada which was something like
Cingulars. So we turned off the cell phones in Canada and went to
Pocketmail which saved us a bunch of money. That seemed to satisfy the
talkative relatives also.
As things change almost monthly in that business we are going to start
calling Verizon for the latest plans and costs in March or early April in
preparation for the Alaska trip next summer. I would guess that if enough
people call and ask questions about Alaska and Canada wireless service they
just might start paying attention. Perhaps the Verizon arrangement with ACS
will help to provide a good plan.
We have found that the newer phones work at a longer and longer range too.
Every little bit helps.
