While driving home from teaching in Meriden, I was going to stop at Job Lot in (1231 East Main Street)
From my car while turning from Main St. into the parking lot I spotted a group of crows mobbing a hawk with a long tail and flying just like a kite. Luckily I had my small binoculars in the car so I parked the car and spotted the bird. It was a subadult Mississippi Kite! It landed at the top of a pine trees across the street from the parking area and I got a good look at it.The crows then chased it off it’s perch and it flew out of sight.
A totally unexpected species in a totally unexpected spot.
The moral of the story is always carry binoculars in your car!
