Bonjour,
One word about doctors and prescriptions in Canada. It is possible for a
Canadian doctor to call in any pharmacy in Canada to give a prescription by
telephone or fax.
My brother in law is a doctor in Quebec City and he sends the prescription
to my local pharmacy if ever I get sick. It even worked with US pharmacies
in New York and Vermont, when I was on Lake Champlain with a bad pneumony.
I believe US doctors could probably fax prescriptions to a Canadian doctor,
and he would call the pharmacy near to your location, as long as we are
talking of "soft" prescriptions.
If any useful, I probably can help to provide some doctors names, phone
numbers and fax in Montreal, Quebec City and near by Lake Champlain.

Anyone got a good idea for obtaining prescription medicines while
cruising
the Great Lakes, Trent-Severn (Canada) and ICW south to Florida? My
doctor
will write me a whole pad of prescriptions and not date them (I can
do that
when I need to get them filled) but he says they will not be honored
in
Canada.

Your doctor is correct. I checked with my parmacist in Toronto,
Canada and he says by law they can only fill prescriptions written by
Ontario physicians. My recommendation is to carry enough medication
for the duration of the trip, that's what I do. Just make sure you
leave all medication in the containers with your name and the name of
the medication. Heard about some eager custom-types confiscating
anything in unmarked bottles.
If you run into an emergency situation, visit a Canadian doctor or
hospital, pay cash and try getting reimbursed from your insurance
agency when you return. Another alternative is to have special travel
coverage by Blue Cross, Autoclub etc.
Further: Except on the Trent-Severn and northern lakes, you are never
very far from a U.S. port, where you can get your U.S. prescription
filled. From where I am - Pickering, Ont. - to Wilson Harbour, N.Y.
it's a scant 30 miles by boat and a pleasant day-trip at that across
Lake Ontario. I know, because I/we like to go there and visit their
well-stocked package store. ;-)
Hope you have a pleasant journey this summer and perhaps we'll run
into each other on Lake Ontario.
