Can anyone suggest a source for a marine SSB receiver (receive only - not a
transceiver).  I would like to receive in the 4 and 8 mhz band for weather
fax and need AC and 12 volt DC power and RS-232 port for connection to the
laptop.  I have read that you can get these for around $300 as opposed to
$1200 for the full transceiver.  West Marine does not have them.

Thanks,

JimB

Ham stores sell such things - AES, HRO, Jun's and similar.  ICOM makes a PC
brick called the PCR1000 ($400) the will do it.  You may need some software
as well - though some of these receivers come with it.  The Lowe 150 is
another that comes to mine.

There are SSB capable receivers from Grundig and Sony  though you may find
them less suitable.

You might also consider a used marine or amateur transceiver.  The ICOM 735
or similar comes to mind.  Available often on Ebay or ham usenet lists.
Sell for $400 to $500.

This stuff lasts a long, long time and is usually in good shape when bought
in the ham community.

I have just bought a Grundig YB400PE receiver only. West has them in
their Xmas catalogue for $199. U.S.  I just spent a pleasant
afternoon listening to "Herb" and his interactive weather advise for
boats in the Bermuda/Caribbean and U.S. coastline areas. Herb
transmits at 12359 kHz SSB at 2000 UTC daily. This receiver works on
6 batteries or AC adapter(included) and covers 160 kHz to 30 MHz but
has no RS232 port (you need a modem for that). I'm quite impressed.

Jim:
Try the Ham stores. they frequently have used equipment on consignment
or trade-ins that go for a really good price.
