Good morning! I just got my first HP-53132A frequency counter and Prologix GPIB-USB converter. Now I can do some measurements and I am excited about it. Everything looks promising. Condition of the instrument on the outside is like new, controls responsive and no fading in lettering at the buttons. Connectors are not worn or damaged, original connectors. The unit has been tested and works OK, probably not with adequate calibration but that is not an issue now, I can always calibrate it later.
What worries me is the display. Even though being an Agilent built unit, it has probably more hours on it than a seldom used HP built unit. The flourescent display is fading, not all the digits show consistent illumination levels. The left-most digits show some flickering at some of their segments. It is readable in the end, but I am terribly disappointed about it.
Does anybody know if there is a cure for this? Or should I start saving for a better unit.
I am not afraid of the screwdriver or the soldering iron if someones suggests a display overhaul. Thank you!

You will be using the counter much on the GPIB than looking to the display,
so try to keep the unit untouched. Better to use it and think about another
one, now that you have one, you are not in a hurry so you can select a
better one. You can also hunt for an SR620 or a Wavecrest... 25pS (or less)
instead of 150pS is better. Isn't it?

The replacement display board is available for about $550. The display itself may be available if you could find the part number for about $125, but Agilent WILL NOT give the raw display part number out. I ran into this same problem with the 3458A and was finally able to find the number and order some. Does anyone on the list have the raw display part number? There is also a small chance the problem is in the HV module. Perhaps going straight to the display vendor.

Two possibilities: Cathode poisoning or bad tantalum caps. I'm not sure if "cathode poisoning" is really the correct term for this effect, but it's similar. There have been a number of tutorials out there about rejuvenating VF displays.
The one I have direct experience with is bad caps. We bought an HP 6612C power supply with a bad display for an automated test setup. It's basically the same VF display used in a lot of the instruments from that family.
We didn't really need the display because it was for an automated setup, but I wanted to fix it anyway. When I removed the display board I found that it had 3 or 4 large tantalum caps on one edge. One of the caps was toasted a crispy brown color instead of the usual yellow. After replacing that cap the display came right back to life and has been working fine for a couple of years, now.
BTW: those display and button boards are a bit of a trick to remove. They're slide in from the side under some "L" shaped plastic features in the case front. There are instructions in the service manual for dealing with them.

Thank you. You are right regarding the GPIB operation but since I was looking for a high resolution frequency counter as well for a versatile basic instrument to start measuring with, I choose this frequency counter.
Hunting for a better unit right now will not be a priority as the budget is tight and I can always have one for Christmas without being audited by my significant other ; ) Still, it would be very nice to go down to 25ps for sure!

Unless it is a bad tantalum capacitor, as suggested: in this case yes, it
has to be fixed.

These are made by Noritake-Itron. The generic part number is CP3033A, but it does not show up in their product line on their web site. It might be worth contacting them to see if there's any possibility of still getting them.

to avoid more display "consumption" during long acquisitions, there is
an HPIB command to blank the display on the counter. I have asked to
KE5FX to add this feature in Timelab during the acquisition setup. Hope
he have time to do this.

Dear Azelio, Tom, John and Luciano ( I hope I am not missing anybody),
Thank you all of you for your kind advise on this subject. I am sorry I was unable to reply in a timely manner. I had to leave town for a week for new IT business. I think I will start by dismantling the unit display and test the tantalum capacitors as you mentioned. If I can achieve success by doing this it is fine. Otherwise I could consider using it as the GPIB workhorse as I just started to obtain my first ADEV, MDEV and TDEV graphs with TimeLab and a Prologix adapter. May I know the command for turning the display off via the GPIB port? That is something nice for long periods of sampling.
A whole new world has just opened to me. Know I am starting to get intimate with my frequency standards by knowing them in deep. If all goes well I should start updating my wish list for a Wavecrest DTS unit next year. For now I will squeeze every single Tau value from the graphs using the 53132A.
Last but not least. If the display fades away I could eventually consider buying a new one as the whole instrument is in pristine condition and would be a shame to see it working without a brilliant display.

Last but not least. If the display fades away I could eventually consider buying a new one as the whole instrument is in pristine condition and would be a shame to see it working without a brilliant display.

These are made by Noritake-Itron. The generic part number is
CP3033A, but it does not show up in their product line on their web
site. It might be worth contacting them to see if there's any
possibility of still getting them.
