TUFTED DUCK was the highlight of reports received April 3
through April 10 from the Niagara Frontier Region.
April 6, a female TUFTED DUCK among SCAUP at the Black Rock
Canal, between Austin Street and Hertel Avenue, in Buffalo's
Black Rock section. The duck was not found on April 7.
SNOWY OWLS still in the region. Two reports on April 7 - one
on Hulbert Road in the Niagara County Town of Wilson, and a
second SNOWY OWL, appearing to be feeding on carrion, at
Sunset Beach in the Orleans County Town of Carlton.
April 9, on and over Lake Ontario off Wilson, 12 waterfowl
species, plus 27 RED-THROATED LOONS, 10 COMMON LOONS, 12
HORNED GREBES, 116 RED-NECKED GREBES, OSPREY, KILLDEER, and
38 BONAPARTE'S GULLS. Also in Wilson, a PILEATED WOODPECKER;
uncommon on the Lake Ontario shore.
Other reports this week - arrival of PURPLE MARTIN, YELLOW-
B. SAPSUCKER, HERMIT THRUSH, CHIPPING SPARROW and FIELD
SPARROW. Also, COMMON GALLINULE at Tifft Nature Preserve in
Buffalo. RUSTY BLACKBIRDS in the Iroquois Refuge. Continuing
reports of EASTERN PHOEBE, TREE SWALLOW, BROWN CREEPER,
GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET, EASTERN TOWHEE, FOX SPARROW and SONG
SPARROW. A breeding plumage COMMON LOON at the Batavia Waste
Water Plant. At feeders, a single PURPLE FINCH in Wilson and
a pair of PURPLE FINCHES in Cheektowaga. And AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES noted in breeding plumage.
