Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsHello all . . . .
I congratulate everyone who has given Tom such good advice on his planned
trip from Florida to the Tennessee. As they say here in Alabama, y'all done
good.
As concerns flooding conditions, I believe it appropriate to share with you
the beginning of a presentation I have often given that's entitled "River
Navigation 101."
As is true with all aspects of nature, rivers have a mission. For them,
that mission is to drain water from the uplands toward the sea. Most of the
time, that's an orderly and peaceful process. But when the heavy rains come,
rivers are all business because there's a big job to be done. It's during
those times when it's best to stay out of their way. For boaters, that means
staying tied to the dock until the urgency of the mission subsides.
I offer this analogy. Suppose some morning you walk into the office of the
boss and ask for a few minutes of his or her time. And the boss explains
that because some critical reports must get out, it would be much better if you
came back later in the day or better yet, the next morning. Barring a true
emergency, common sense tells you it would be foolish for you to pursue the
matter.
So it is when we are traveling the rivers, particularly during spring wihen
high rainfall is most likely. Ignore a river's mission and you quickly incur
much higher levels of frustration, anxiety and risk. But respect that
mission with patience and understanding and the river will endlessly reward you with
some of the finest cruising experiences of your life.

Fred,
You are absolutely correct. The corollary to what you said is what we abide
on our boat:
"We don't have a schedule and are sticking to it."
A schedule will compel an otherwise prudent captain to go when he should
stay and stay when he should go!!!!

I want to thank everyone that posted replies to my request for information
on running counter clockwise on the loop this spring. Much of the
information I have filed for future reference.
We plan to enter Mobile River by the1st of May (weather permitting) and enjoying a slow run north to Florence, Al.
Thanks again....
