<<I have 1400 amp house bank to charge.. I am using a 105 amp
single belt alternator that has shredded 2 belts in the last 60
hours.. I was wondering if anyone has installed a high amp
alternator on a 12 kw onan generator?>>

My single 1/2" belts last about 400 hours, so there may be
something amiss.  Check that the sheaveson the alternator is
exactly aligned with the sheave on the crankshaft.  To check,
remove the belt, and use a long tubular tool about 3/8" dia, like
a very long screwdriver, to check alignment.  Lay the tube in the
large sheave, pressed against the sheave sides, and rotate until
it comes near the small sheave.  It will be apparent if the
sheaves aren't aligned perfectly.  The alternator or bracket can
usually be shimmed to improve the alignment.

Next check the surface finish of the insides of all the sheaves.
if corroded, pitted, or sharp scratches are present, use emery
cloth to smooth.

Finally, check the quality of belt you are using.  I once bought
a couple of cheap ($2.99) belts at a discount automotive store.
They were worth just what I paid.  Now I buy only Gates Green
Stripe or Dayco Top Cog, about $18 each in my size (58.5").

I figure if i'm running the generator i might as well have a big
alternator on the front end to help out with dc power..
Is there any braketry available for installing an alternator on a onan?
Also is there larger pulleys like 9" available for a cat. 3208?
Where would one find these items?
