Hi, For anyone unsuccessful so far in adding Pileated Woodpecker to their winter's list, one has established a roost in Thickson's Woods. It arrives each day late in the afternoon, often about 4:15, but sometimes earlier. It is not an early riser, seeming to remain abed until sunup. It is very vocal as it arrives in the p.m.and before departure in the morning. It usually spends ten or fifteen minutes in the woods after arriving in the afternoon before retiring for the night, and again before departure in the morning. This pattern has persisted for the past month. It is quite vocal during much of the time, so is easy to locate. A Northern Flicker is also roosting in the woods, but seems less reliable. Unfortunately, there are currently no Carolina Wrens resident in the woods, but the horned owls are becoming more vocal. To reach Thickson's Woods, exit from 401 to Thickson Road South in Whitby. Proceed south past Wentworth Street to the Waterfront Trail. Turn around, and park on the east side of Thickson Road. Walk east along the Waterfront Trail and enter the woods on a path from the south side, about 200 metres east of Thickson Road. Follow the trails through the woods, some of which access the Lake Ontario shore. To view the beaver pond and Corbett Creek Marsh continue east about 100 metres past the entrance to the woods. The meadow is across the Waterfront Trail immediately north of the woods. The meadow entrance is directly across the waterfront trail from the entrance to the woods.
