TWL: MOB and No. I (was: El Toilette)

"Some very disproportionate amount(like around 85%) of MOBs

started this
way and  the majority did not make it back to the boat.  I know
we have all
done it........Y'all be careful out there."

This old saw has been going around forever, and I, for one, don't give it
much credence.  Who talked to the dead men to find out what happened when
they fell over the side?

Don't know how much credence to give to this but anecdotally a large
number of drowned men supposedly had their fly undone. (Another old
wife's tale?)

They are found with their fly open.

At a recent Basic Coast Guard Auxilary basic course we were told that the
most common small boating death was falling overboard and drowning.  Most
of the victims are male, and have their flys open.  A high blood alchohol
content is a common factor.  I got the impression that this was more than
anecdotal.

The 2nd most common death, tho only a fraction, seems to be young ladies
falling off the bow, and being sucked under into the props.  They seem to
think that they are Rose on the Titanic.  The other day I watched a modern
plastic boat going thru the locks.  On the bow were a couple of young ladies
in bikinis sunning themselves on top of towels.  On this particular boat
the forward part sloped downwards toward the bow.  While there was a rail,
nothing else would stop them from sliding forward thru the openings into
into the drink.

You may be right, Rich.  But, to make it more interesting, I've heard that
many of the ones that were found had their flys open. :)
