Has anyone experienced a red tailed hawk who isn't afraid of humans ? I
have a hawk that will come and watch me cut the grass , it will sit on the
branch no more than 8 feet above me and just watch as i cut the grass even
going underneath the hawk while it is perched on the branch ( me on the
riding mower ) doesn't phase it one bit . It will folloow me around the
yard as I cut the grass and I have even walked over to it and stood under
the branch to watch the hawk and it doesn't phase,it , I look at it and it
kooks at me.

It might have learned that "equipment" may flush prey animals.

When I’ve been in the arid west I’ve watched hawks ride on those huge irrigation arms as they circled through the fields.

It probably has learned that mice and small mammals often flee from a mower and is looking for an easy meal.  Hawks frequently follow haying equipment on farms.

Here in New York City, our local Red-tailed Hawks are pretty much unphased
by people, especially juveniles. They are often seen, in Central Park at
least, on low, pathside branches with heavy foot traffic right below and
are generally hard to flush.

I have several times walked right up to a perched or on the ground juvenile Red-tailed Hawk; apparently sometimes they have not been taught to fear humans.  They’ll learn quick enough.  If it's an adult, prey gleaning is more likely.

Once I hit a golf ball into a sand trap. Young red-Tailed flew down and
stood guard over the ball, glaring at me. I guess he thought it was an egg.
I told him he was wasting his time and he reluctantly flew off.

Our red-tails are quite fearless. They hang out to watch us do
everything from mow to snowplow to dragging the trash barrels up the
driveway. I've had them swoop low over my head making a soft
"honk-honk-honk" noise, and they'll perch in our weeping cherry over
the kitchen patio even when we're out there socializing. In return for
their polite company, we let them take all the chipmunks they can
catch from our feeder area (which is quite a few).

Our red-tails are quite fearless. They hang out to watch us do everything from mow to snowplow to dragging the trash barrels up the driveway. I've had them swoop low over my head making a soft "honk-honk-honk" noise, and they'll perch in our weeping cherry over the kitchen patio even when we're out there socializing. In return for their polite company, we let them take all the chipmunks they can catch from our feeder area (which is quite a few). :-) Tammy Eustis, Chester On 6/28/18, Paul Plotnick via CTBirds <ctbirds@lists.ctbirding.org> wrote: > Once I hit a golf ball into a sand trap.
