Regarding Kens question if you could get the medical kit with our without a
captains licenses, the answer is you do not have to have any license to get
the kit. The only part of the kit that's an issue is the narcotics. The
narcotics are prescribed by your travel physician (we used the University of
Washington Travel Clinic) where the Dr. wrote the prescriptions. Lafferties
then provides the kit, the drugs and a comprehensive list you can provide to
the port entry officials. We were under the impression we would be asked
for our drug list in every port, in reality we never had anyone ask us about
drugs on the boat. I was always prepared with the list, but never had to
provide it. I got some advice NOT to share the list unless asked, because
some port officials might be motivated to take possession of the drugs.
Again, we never faced this issue, so maybe those warnings are folklore. We
paid $1,000 for the kit, complete in a bright yellow Pelican case. I have
decided to keep it because we will use it on our next boat. The
prescription drugs that are nearing expiration are being sent to a contact
in the Peace Corps, where they will be used in 3rd world countries.
