Datum/ET5390-6000 White Wire change for DT102E FW and bodge-wire

Hi There!

After years collecting dust in storage, I've finally pulled my last
5390-6000 out of hibernation for use as a 10Mhz standard in the home
shop/lab. Unfortunately, this unit was one that I hadn't completed the
DT102E update, and I've since misplaced or misfiled the doc from Datum
detailing the accompanying bodge-wire modification to the GPS mainboard..

I believe this eventually made it to a field bulletin.. Might someone on
this list have a unit that is modified or have a copy of said bulletin?

Thanks in advance!

Steve N2JXL..

Hi -

You mention a '5390-6000' but that's not a model I'm familiar with. You did mention DT102E however, and I do have an image like that for the 9390-6000.

You can grab it (along with DT101E and DT103E) from my Dropbox:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/91y3qtcm124hvce/DATUM_9390-6000_GPSDO_EEPROM_FW.rar?dl=0

I uploaded it to KO4BB.com, but you'll need to use the ftp access to grab it. It will take a bit for it to get migrated to the proper location on the site. (Unfortunately, I messed up the upload via the applet (sorry Didier!) and sent an empty file - oops!)

These are the images that I have - I am not 100% sure they are named correctly - I seem to remember using the DT103E image on my OCXO unit. They are currently in storage so I'm unable to check. So YMMV :)

I'm not aware of a bodge wire modification, but I'd like to hear more about it. What was it supposed to accomplish?

Hope that helps.

Hi Paul!

My apologies.. I fat-fingered the title.. Ugh!
You are correct, I meant the Datum 9390-6000.

I have the "E" images for DT102/103 (they were sent to me directly from
Symmetricom back in '09), although this is the OCXO version so only 102 is
needed.
I distinctly remember there was a white-wire mod needed which if memory
serves correctly, had to do with the boot-up of the unit.

Fun fact.. Back on March 21, 2009, this little ditty of a GPS bug took all
of our Payload Uplink antennas into the ground at Sirius Radio. I was out
to dinner with my (now Ex) wife and a group of friends and sat on a curb
outside of a restaurant for almost 2 hours trying to figure out what had
happened and how to restore tracking.. We were on the phone with
Symmetricom immediately and they were just as surprised as we were.
What a flustercluck. Our firmware fix came overnight delivery right from
the lab! LOL.

I did get my 9390 to lock-up (I want to use this for a freq reference on my
home lab/bench), although it's finicky at startup.
I'll do a bit more digging and see if I can find the original
instructions...

Ok Steve -

Upon re-reading your message, it seems that I misunderstood. It's only that mod you are looking for. My units still seemed to operate correctly after the firmware change. Maybe mine are of such a rev that the mod isn't required. Still interested to hear about if you uncover it.

WRT your experience, I feel your pain. Only from the other side :) (3AM in a Verizon Wireless MTSO with a Sun SPARC laptop... ah, the good old days :)

Cheers!
