George,
I'm sorry you took offence, which was certainly not my intention. My little
Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines "stunt (n) : an unusual or spectacular
feat." No derogative connotation that I see? Just as Evil Knievel jumping
the Grand Canyon or the guys (and girls) in their Open 60's who headed off
non-stop around the world the other day. I certainly can't attribute the
various motives behind these undertakings, and my view of them takes nothing
away from the undertaking. It would, as you say, indeed be a boring world
if we all held the same view of every event.
But we were discussing the design of a "Perfect Passagemaker" (PPM),
specifically the comfort in a seaway of such a vessel. Idlewild was held up
as one example; others took issue with this concept. Such is the nature of
discussion. The point I was trying to make (please correct me if I'm
mistaken) was that Idlewild was designed and built to get the Gray's around
the world via their chosen route, including some very long (and unique)
passages, and comfort at sea was not the highest criteria. I imagine that if
a client came to you asking for the most comfortable seagoing vessel
possible, the result might be somewhat different than Idlewild? I would for
instance enjoy your views on the relative merits of one of your deep-vee
designs (say Jupitor) vs a flatter bottomed boat like Idlewild?
You can find a little information on who I am at the sites below.
My best to all, Tad Roberts
