Generally speaking what spares does the list recommend even though the
cruising adventure is planned to be in domestic waters?
I of course accept belts, hoses, an alternator, oil (???) oil and fuel
filters, please go from there....
Thnx, Ross

Besides what has been mentioned-
Carry you engine/equipment manuals/parts catalogues:
We were stranded for 4 days behind Nakwakto Rapids in the wilds of BC
because we blew a gasket on the high pressure fuel filter. It's one of those
numerous gaskets of which you can't carry them all. Thankfully my husband
found the problem was able to find the correct part number and finding a
logger who lived on a float home in another cove-he was able to get out on
his cell phone (with a booster) and call around to find the needed
gasket..It was found in Vancouver BC, shipped to Port McNeill, on Vancouver
Island, then driven by courier to Port Hardy where it was put on a "crew"
float plane to the nearby logging camp. Finally delivered to us via the
loggers tow boat! :) It was quite an adventure...and all we had was a little
portable genset!
Also make sure you have "adequate" tow insurance! :)

I would add now days, a laptop and cellular/EVDO modem.
Small container of West System epoxy.
Wide selection of stainless screws, bolts, wire.
I would add a West Marine catalog
Bob and Brian Smith's phone numbers and email addresses
An account with a boater mail forwarding service (they can get your parts
into the Bahamas or Canada - this ain't their first rodeo - they know how to
do it).
Get all specs you have available in one place, i.e., size, brand, and serial
or part numbers for everything e.g., oil, filters (all types), fan belts,
props (size and pitch). Take good digital photos of all these items and
build a book of specs.
To make sure you get the "right stuff" shipped in addition to the specs, use
a good digital camera to take pictures of these parts so that you can email
the photos to the parts supplier when ordering. If size matters, lay a ruler
next to the part. If numbers matter, clean the part to find the numbers
stamped on them. Take photos of identifying characteristics of the part you
need.
Theory: If you can find a physical address ashore, most of what you will
need out of the ordinary can be shipped to you overnight.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it (for now).

Apologies - our spares list (a Word table) didn't come through in usable
fashion.
I'll give it another try - hope this version is more readable.
This spares list is mostly for a Volvo diesel and a Yamaha 9.9hp kicker
There are a few other things thrown in - everything with a part number.
Items like engine oil, distilled water, wire, connectors, tape, etc are
not listed.
I tried to list all the item descriptions.
I can't include the other columns for quantity on hand, quantity needed,
and price.

Carry you engine/equipment manuals/parts catalogues:
Many (most in fact) of the products I have on board have PDF versions of the
manuals available. For more recent products these are often available from
the manufacturer's web site, while in the case of obsolete products scanned
versions of old manuals may be found at various user-support sites. I have
been hard at work collecting these and I keep them on my main computer as
well as on the backup laptop. It's very, very helpful.
I've also found that lots of manufacturers and suppliers (Depco Pumps comes
to mind, see http://www.depcopump.com/catalog110/Catalog110full.zip) have
their entire catalogs available for download as PDF. These can be very, very
helpful to have on board.

Ron, Pascal & others -
I just re-read Steve DAntonio's article on spares in PassageMaker
magazine's December 2003 issue. Steve mentions a personal dislike for duct
tape due to the water solubility of the backing and the mess it leaves
behind after the backing comes off. Instead he recommends 100 MPH tape. He
says it has many of the attributes of duct tape AND it is waterproof. Steve
advises that it can be found online at www.uscav.com or 800-7777172.
just thought you'd be interested.
