Hi All -
My wife and I are new to trawlering but have sailed for over 40 years.
We now run a Cape Horn 65 drawing 7' and wish to hear from anyone who has
cruised the Hudson River in Oct. regarding places of interest, things to
avoid, anything of concern, etc. We'd like to spend not more than 7-10 days
up/back from NYC on our way South for the winter.
Feel free to contact us via the list or directly at John@Windermere54.com
Thanks/regards,

We will be heading back down the Hudson in late Aug after going up to
Lake Champlain for the summer season and then back to Miami
I am sure that various folks, esp Jim Healy and Larry Zetlin will
chime in with details. Larry has written a detailed cruising guide to
the river which I am sure he will send you.
Some high ponts for us this year ) this is our third trip up and we
have never gone down - once down St Lawrence and once on Great Loop)
Kingston - stay at Municipal marina on the wall near the MV Rip Van Winkle
Albany - stop at the small floating dock and go to see the State
Capitol and esp the Historical Museum. Take a taxi through the bad
neighborhood.
Rent a car and see the Hudson valley away from the river itself. -
Culinary Institute and Hyde Park especially.
Waterford - Big wall with lots of room for a big boat. this makes a
good car rental spot too to drive and see sights mentioned. Call
Enterprise for pickup.
Many of the smaller stops are increasingly difficult with a bigger
ship. The channel tends to be deep but end abruptly. You will have to
anchor on a skinny margin to gain the shore. Most of the docks are
floating and rather flimsy for a big boat.
The trip itself is magnificent, especially near Storm King and West
point and again on the upper river north of Catskill where the river
is more idyllic.

If you end up near Hyde park with a car, be sure to visit "Old Reinbeck
Aerodrome", headquarters of the late Cole Palen's WW-I flying circus...
