JOB TITLE: Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian

SUPERVISOR: Director of University Libraries and Archives

DEPARTMENT: Division of Academic Affairs/Library Services

BCAT: 00401X

DESCRIPTIVE:

Albany State University, a Historically Black University is located in Albany, Georgia, invites applications for the position of Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian.  Reporting to the Director of Library Services and Archives, this is a position which is responsible for all the processing of Serials and maintenance of the collection and Electronic Resources. Evaluates current print and non-print Serials in order to update the Serials collection. Implements the collection assessment of all electronic collections owned by the libraries.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  •  Provides management of electronic resources, serials, and other ongoing subscriptions services for materials of all formats, languages, subjects, etc.; provides leadership for the continuing development of the serials information; responsible for the acquisition of serials to support current and new programs; assists patrons in locating information in the serials department.
    
  •  Responsible for the information technology infrastructure for the library; serves as the database administrator for the library's integrated system; provides leadership in solving problems related to the delivery of electronic resources; locates/creates digital content supporting academic instruction; assists with the creation of electronic records for the ASU Ram Scholar; responsible for any open-source projects.
    
  • Cross-train other personnel in the department on ALMA serials module procedures and processes; may supervise and train students in the Serials/Electronic Resources department; consults with the Technical Services, Acquisitions Librarian, Catalog Librarian, and the Library Director to develop and implement new and/or revised serials processing procedures.

  • Serves as subject bibliographer/liaison with academic departments/divisions; develops and implements goals related to the University's strategic plan, the Academic Affairs goals, and library goals that are measurable and specific.
    
  • Performs all functions related to the library's binding process, including preparing and sending materials to the bindery, reviewing the accuracy and quality of the bindery's work, and then processing volumes returned from the bindery to shelves.

  • Performs serials-related functions for the handling of Library materials including but not limited to checking-in, routing and processing of newly-received materials, claiming missing and/or damaged materials, binding, and withdrawal of out-of-date or discarded materials using the ALMA integrated library system.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MLS/MLIS/MIS degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program is required.

  • Experience in an academic or research setting with supervisory responsibilities; negotiation for materials and bindery contracts, preservation, disaster preparedness and interaction with vendors is desired.

  • Must be familiar with AACR2 cataloging rules, Library of Congress and subject heading and have OCLC and cataloging experience. Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others are required. Must have experience with an integrated library system, preferably ALMA.

  • Prior academic library experience; prior Technical Services experience; prior experience with Millennium serials module; ability to work well independently and with others; ability to solve problems; ability to carry out tasks with minimal supervision and follow through in a timely manner; ability to be flexible and adjust to change preferred.

  • Experience with and strong commitment to customer service and library instruction; proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Web development tools.

  • Must be able to work some evenings, nights and weekends.
