After a lumpy run from Curacao during the night to Aves de Sotavento, DD
anchored in front of the Coast Guard station at 06:30 hr, on Nov. 6th.  Aves
de
Sotavento is a horseshoe shaped reef with a few little islands just 35 NM
east
of Bonaire in Venezuela.  The largest is Isla Larga and houses the
Coast Guard
post consisting of 10 young coasties and one officer.  The crew
has to stay one
month before being rotated back to base.  It happens many
times that the supply
ship does not show up and the boys run low on food.
Not long after our arrival
the VHF radio cracked to life and a Venezuelan
Coast Guard officer called:
"White ship."  Every boat is a "white ship" but
this time they meant us and we
weret asked to launch our dinghy and come to
shore.  A minute later they called
us again and asked if we happened to have
some ketchup for them.  Of course we
had.
Before leaving Curacao DD had
stocked up. Additional to food we bought two cases
of Coors Light, which was
on special at the Goisco supermarket in Curacao, but
somehow in the haste we
must have grabbed the wrong cases. During the trip,
looking forward to pop a
few cans, we discovered with tears in our eyes that
both cases contained malt
beer.  Shiiit!!  No one on board liked malt beer, so
we added the malt beer
to the ketchup and topped this package off with a 1.25 kg
jar of honey
roasted peanuts from California.  A good thing we brought malt
beer, the
Coast Guard was not supposed to receive alcoholic beverages and the
boys
looked pretty young to us as well.  I didn't tell them that the malt beer
is
good for breast feeding moms :-)
