A capable Laptop with 10Gb Lan support for USRP X310?

For the development of a RFNoC project I have a powerful tower PC with an
Intel X520-DA2 PCIe card which features dual 10Gb SPF+ ports. With some
Cisco SFP 10G Copper Twinax cable this matches the USRP X310’s network
connectivity well.

We are considering taking the project on the road, and it would be really
nice to have something a bit more portable than the tower PC. Has anybody
investigated a Laptop solution that includes 10Gb Lan support? A quick
Google highlights Laptops with Thunderbolt 3 interfaces (USB Type-C 3.1),
and external Thunderbolt 3 to 10Gb SPF+ adapters like the following.

http://www.sonnettech.com/product/twin10g-sfp-thunderbolt3.html

https://www.atto.com/products/thunderbolt-adapters/thunderlink/thunderbolt-to-ethernet/TLNS-3102-D00

Has anybody considered something like this, or got an alternative Laptop
solution?

Thanks in advance, Mark.

Hello Mark,

Yes, people have used external Thunderbolt to 10 GigE SFP+ adapters
successfully in the past.

I do not have up to date information about the level of performance to be
expected in such a setup however. In the video Balint is streaming at 100
MS/s, half the potential bandwidth of one channel, and only receiving. I
believe we may have some more recent testing results and will try to find
those for you.

Derek

Hello Mark:

We have successfully used the devices below with a Lenovo ThinkPad T560
laptop running Ubuntu 16.04.3.

When testing the Akitio PCIe expansion box, we used the Intel X710-DA2 with
it.

The 10 Gbps RJ45 Ethernet SFP+ modules that we've successfully used are the
10GTek and the ProLabs 10G-SFPP-T-C.

Hi all.

On our side, we have tried the Promise Sanlink3, with 10Gtk 10G-SFP-T
https://www.amazon.com/10GBase-T-10Gigabit-Transceiver-30-Meter-ipolex/dp/B01N3OGEYI/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1519071349&sr=1-5&keywords=10G-SFP-T&dpID=412-jbxU4pL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
under
Windows, with "limited" success in Tx (we experience erratic under-runs
when going 2x50MSPS and more, while we don't experience those with
Sanlink2).
However, this Sanlink3 T1
https://www.promise.com/Products/SANLink/SANLink3-T1 does not support
Linux.

Neel:

  • Is there a specific Linux driver to install for eh "Akitio Thunderbolt3
10G Network Adapter", or did it just work out of the box?
  • Do you know if there could be a performance difference bwetween
    "10Gtek-10G-SFP-T" and "10Gtek-10G-SFP-T-S"  ?
