Economical Cruising

Well, I have read with great interest all the information regarding economical
cruising.  For a couple of years I had a 29' Prairie that cruised at 7 knots
(average) with a fuel consumption of less than 1 GPH.  It was awesome and I
loved the little boat which had considerable comfort for it's size.  I the
realized that I needed a little more space and speed and went on a search for
a larger boat with a little more power.  When cruising the intracoastal
waterways with narrow channels most of the time I encountered too many
dangerous situations where I couldn't get out of my own way with the trawler -
very sad but the reality!  I found a 1985 40' Mainship Nantucket that had been
repowered in 1996 with twin 170HP Yanmar diesels.  I know there are some
originals out there with 200HP Perkins.  It is an incredibly fuel efficient
boat for it's size and comfort.  I average a 13 Knot cruising speed (which
puts the boat on plane) with a fuel consumption of about 8 GPH.  At trawler
speed I know it is considerably better but then one trades speed for economy
which is almost a toss-up.  it It doesn't get much better than that unless you
can be satisfied with something like the Prairie.  Good luck with the search!
