With a successful voyage down the west coast, tomorrow we begin our
Passagemaking lifestyle. There is a big difference between going down the
West coast and being in the Sea of Cortez (or in the middle of the Atlantic
Ocean or S. Pacific!). The boat is full to the brim with filters, spares,
food, charts (paper and digital) and everything I can think of to bring with
us. We will take on 900 gallons of fuel in Ensenada and continue south with
53 other boats on the FUBAR Odyssey.
I wanted to thank all those of you that have provided so much help over the
last few years. You have helped me outfit the boat in a responsible way,
you've taught me lessons that will improve our safety, you've warned us
about the pitfalls of voyaging with little real experience. Now we begin to
build our experience. Are we ready? Honestly, we are as ready as a couple
can be with a year of preparation. Do we have all the skills we need to be
100% safe? No, but we will do everything we can to build those skills and
apply sound judgment to the process of picking our weather windows to
maximize success.
We are blessed to have a great family cruising alongside us for the next 4
or 5 months. Patrick, Susan and Jonathan Coonan on the 43' Nordhavn Paloma
will be alongside us as we head South. We have found great securing
traveling during the day and at night with another vessel. It requires
great compromise and flexibility as each family meets the needs and desires
of the other, constantly giving and taking to make sure everyone comes out
as winners.

Finally I want to thank three people who have become inspirations and
mentors to me.
Dr. Bob Austin in Pensacola FL has replied to dozens and dozens of request
for information or assistance, both on and off the list. His half century
of experience and wisdom are invaluable to someone like me, but more
importantly his willingness to help someone so new to the adventure is
simply outstanding. Thank you Bob!
Dave Cooper on Swansong. While Dave is a fairly recent addition to the list
( a year or so?) I find his postings to be so full of valuable information I
read every word he submits. Again, Dave's willingness to share real world
experience and knowledge is helpful in ways too numerous to describe.
Finally, Capt. Mike Maurice. If you have never met Mike in person, you
can't really know Mike. He is a soul 200 years out of sync with the golden
age of sail, where he would have been as capable a world voyager as any we
read about in history class. The sea has been Mikes living for decades and
he has brought that experience to the list in unsolicited postings that
often take him hours to research, clarify, compose and post. Under an
apparently callous exterior is a hart of gold and a willingness to help
others at the drop of a hat or the ring of a cell phone. I'm proud to say
Mike is more then a mentor, he is a real friend. I'm lucky to have him in
my life and my wife and I are going to be safer because of the knowledge he
has shared with us.
In closing, I want to also thank all the regular contributors to this list
and the T&T list. The PUP list was started with the intention of focusing
on the issues unique to Passagemaking. What I've come to realize in the
last few months is just how hard it is to participate in the list while
pursuing the dream. There is always a pump to repair, a hose clamp to
tighten, a rod holder to mount and a list of a hundred other things to do.
It takes a real commitment to take the time to compose a well thought out
communication and share it with this community. Then, your likely to be
told your full of crap and don't know what your talking about. But then
there's the power of this. Each reader can form his or her own opinion.
Each of us is given the chance to make that decision for ourselves. The one
thing I'd say to those that don't contribute is DO. Please share your
experiences, grow a thick skin. It doesn't matter what someone else says
about your ideas, that's their prerogative. Believe me, if you feel like
taking the time to share it, there is someone out there that would like to
hear it. Unless it's about catamarans, no one wants to hear about
catamarans. I'm kidding, see I'm smiling :^)
Again, thanks to Georgs for hosting this list, and to John Ford for taking
over administration while I go off to play. Please follow along with our
adventure on our web site:
I'll continue to post to PUP, but it will likely be sporadic. Wish us luck
and keep thinking good thoughts!

Scott,
Good luck and be safe and of course I wish I was right next to you in my own
Nordhavn. I am jealous and envious and also excited because soon Sonya and
I will be joining all of you for an adventure of a life time. Keep us
posted with pictures if you can.
Kindest Regards,
Robert Miller

Scott: you've contributed way more than you've received from this list, and others. Have a great trip, I'm happy for you.
You will always be my hero - the man who tried to sell his banker boss on eBay.
Stop by when you are in Florida, I should have a dock for you behind my house.

Mike kindly remarked: Scott: you've contributed way more than you've
received from this list, and others. Have a great trip, I'm happy for you.
Mike, thank you for the kind words. I will stop and see you, count on it!
Also I'd love to meet all the other list members along the way. Don't
hesitate to drop a line and tell us where to meet you!
Again Mike, thank you, Scott
PS, even though it cost me my job, trying to sell my boss (well my boss's
boss) on Ebay was a defining moment in this journey. It was when I realized
life was just too short to waste a single day with corporate bs. Also it
took me to T-Mobile where I met some of the greatest IT people I've every
had the privilege of working with and for.
Ok, off to play, Take care, Scott
