Are the rivers up to Knoxville, TN navigable from the Gulf
Intracoastal Waterway?
Wayne,
Yes, you can go from Mobile, AL via the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
Cruising guide author Fred Myers describes the Tenn-Tom and the Tennessee as
follows:
The Tenn-Tom, opened in 1985, is the result of the largest public works
project in U.S. history. It stretches for 450 miles between Mobile, Alabama,
on the Gulf Coast and the Tennessee River to the north. Along its banks are
miles of undisturbed landscape and small towns steeped in the flavor of the
Old South. Many captains now regard the Tenn-Tom as a cruising destination
as well as a vital north-south water link.
The Tennessee, with nine mainstream dams, is one of the world's most
controlled and easily navigated rivers. From its beginning just east of
Knoxville, Tennessee, to Paducah, Kentucky, where it joins the Ohio River,
the Tennessee sweeps a broad and exceptionally beautiful 652-mile arc
through four states. For good reason, many veteran cruisers rank the
Tennessee near the top on their list of favorite places.
