There is a program called the Visual Passage Planner that I have used to
figure out best routes. It contains the stats for wind, current, weather
from the pilot charts and figures out best routes based upon the
characteristics of your boat and your preference for speed or comfort. It
is being used both by ocean sailboat racers and commercial freighters and
tankers. It does not work very smoothly, but it does work pretty well for
offshore legs.
