Oil for Velvet Drive Transmissions

The manual for my 1985 vintage velvet drive transmissions says to use
automatic transmission fluid or Mobil HD 30. I don't have the manual
with me, but it is quite specific as to the type of transmission fluid,
with a note about the Mobil HD 30 which was evidently later approved by
the manufacturer. The PO and I have always used Mobil HD 30, and I'm
reluctant to change, but am having one heck of a time finding any
(yesterday I visited six different auto stores including NAPA).

I'd call American Diesel but they are closed at this time of day, and I
need to get the oil for a departure on Thursday.

Is there another oil company's product that is recommended, or that
would meet the same (or better) specs as the Mobil product?

After using 30w oil in my velvet drives, I switched last year to ATF.  Have
put about 400 hours on the transmissions since the change over without
problems.  The only problem is that the ATF is harded to see on the dip
stick than the heavier oil.
Bob Smith, American Diesel said that the ATF was specified originally
because of the rotation speed for high speed engines.  Whem the low speed
diesels were installed, 30w oil was allowed to accomodate those who wanted
to carry only oil aboard.

Hi Bob,
I have basically the same trannys, and the po had used, as I did until
recently, Rotella 30w in them. In my research recently as to why my port
transmission was burping oil throught the vent, I talked to the guru at
Transmissions Marine, or whatever the name is, in Ft Lauderdale and he
reccomended that I switch to transmission fluid. I did so, and haven't
noticed any difference in performance, (it still burps) but I guess I feel
better that they "like" the transmission a little better.

I guess this doesn't answer your question exactly, but I would say if you
want to stay with oil, you certainly use the Rotella 30 weight without any
problems.

Bob,

If  you are interested in  experience, here is mine.
When I pur the boat 20 yrs ago it had  trans fluid in the Velvet Drives.
THE diesel shop owner  here suggested  that I use  the same oil as my eng,
30wt.  I did and do and that is over  4,000 hrs ago with NO PROBLEMS at all.
See an extensive article on Velvet Drives on  our web page.
Do not mix  the  types of oil , fully drain and  flush.
