10/15, Milford, Silver Sands State Park - COA Sparrow birdwalk, as part of annual Sparrow Workshop. Led by Frank Mantlik and Tom Murray, with 13 others. A great morning of birding! 53 species. The hotspot for sparrows was definitely the foxtail grass-covered dirt mound at the west end of the grassy overflow parking lot (“sparrow lanes”). Of the 10 sparrow species seen, highlights were Clay-colored, Vesper, 4 White-crowned, 4 Nelson’s, as well as Dickcissel and 2 Bobolinks. We missed seeing a Chat by seconds. A beauty fall day: 44-63F, sunny, clear, calm wind-ideal conditions for viewing sparrows.
