Thanks Arild,
I was aware of this news about a new icebreaker, but the link you sent
was the best story I have read on this news. Our local congressman
(Oberstar) is the sponsor. However, it only has been just introduced.
However, with the way this congress is spending money like there is no
tomorrow, it probably will pass. We will just let our grandkids pay for
it. (Ironically, if the greenies get their way, no salt water vessels
will be allowed on the Great Lakes and that is no mere threat, but a VERY
real possibility. Invasive species. Already Wisconsin may bar salt water
vessels next year. What is even more ironic is that the way the new regs
are written, it could put a stop to even Great Lake ships.) What was
really neat was the OLD Mackinaw which was built during WWII. Now that
was a piece of big iron. The new Mac is smaller, but more high tech and I
guess has more tricky high tech ways of breaking ice than just brute
force.
