Marin has quite appropriately labeled his response as a "very biased opinion".
While I agree with him that the Puget Sound south of LaConner is a very
different cruising area from the San Juan Islands and we also prefer the
secluded coves and fiords of the Brithsh Columbia Sun Coast and Gulf and San
Juan Islands, the Puget Sound and South Sound area does offer a change of pace
and some interesting destinations.
We have enjoyed a weekend at Seattle Bell Harbor. It is located at the center
of Seattle's waterfront. It's an easy walk to downtown Seattle and the famous
Pike's Place (be sure to buy some fresh fish from the vender at the end and
have your fish thrown) . Also an easy bicycle or cab ride to numerous pubs,
restaurants and attractions. We took the Seattle underground and learned a lot
of Seattle's early history.
A short 1 hour trip to Blake Island will get you away from the hubbub of
Seattle and you can relax on the former private island of a Seattle founder
now a Washington State Park. Peacefull setting and good walking.
If you get as far south as Tacoma, the new Dock Street Marina is near
downtown; very safe and secure. Visit the glass museum, the old Union Pacific
Depot, Federal Building and museums within walking distance.
For a peaceful and serene Marina with a great restaurant you can't beat Port
Ludlow. It is on the way to Port Townsend and back home to the San Juans. Good
anchorage and easy dockage. (I'm biased here because PL is our home port).
Port Townsend is another easy stop on the way home. Dock at the Port Hudson
Marina and walk to town, a somewhat restored , somewhat old Victorian seaport.
Old Fort Warden is another attraction worth seeing; a short bicycle or cab
ride.
Anyway, if you enjoy an eclectic cruising style and aren't bent on getting
away from it all on every cruise, you might enjoy the trip south.
