Ni Hao,
I have now been bicycling in Yunnan Provence, China, for 8 days. I bicycled 2 days in each of 4 cities, and the surrounding areas.. In each case except for one, I rented a bicycle through my hotel. The rental cost was anywhere from $5 to $8 a day for a reasonably good mountain bike in reasonably good condition. The cities I biked in were Shangri-La, Lijiang, Dali, & Tengchong. These cities are in Southwest China close to the border with Burma.
In general the bicycling facilities in Yunnan Provence are better than the USA. In these cities the newer roads have a about a 10 foot wide bicycle/ moped/ motorcycle lane in each direction usually separated from the vehicle lanes by a physical barrier, such as a  2 foot high fence, or a raised landscaped island. Most of the mopeds and motorcycles appear to be electrically powered, with little to no noise or exhaust fumes. The larger gasoline powered motorcycles tend to use the vehicle lanes. However, the bicycling can still be a bit crazy, as there is a fair amount of wrong way traffic in the bike lanes, and you will also find slow moving gas powered tricycle delivery trucks, along with pedestrians, and occasional parked cars, or cars that have pulled into the bike lane to pick up or drop off passengers.
In the rural areas there may or may not be a bike lane, and the biggest problem seems to be older trucks and buses spewing out lots of black smoke. The newer vehicles appear to have good emissions controls. In general the motorists are fairly polite, but they do honk their horn before passing you, which can be annoying. In China they do this as a courtesy to let you know they are passing.
Anyway, I have survived the experience, seen some amazing scenery with mountains over 16,000 feet, biked to China's                      " Yellowstone Park  equivalent" geothermal area, seen more Buddist Temples then I care to admit, and am having a great time with no major problems!
Bye for now,Rob Deering
