'WriterFred' is certainly THE authority on the Ten-Tom and associated rivers
..as well as a good friend. All info can be helpful though and here is ours.
We left SW Fla in June and stopped in Fairhope at Eastern Shore Marine on
the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay to visit my cousin for 'a few days' and
ended up staying for 3 weeks (over the 4th of July) waiting for the water to
recede. When we got the word from Fred in Demopolis, we finally left but
still had to fight our way through a virtual forest for a ways on the Mobile
River. Another boat leaving from Dog River (Mobile) left a few days earlier
and had a had time fighting current and trash.
We ended up first, at Green Turtle Bay but eventually, after going to the GL
Rendezvous on the Tenn R (great time!) we continued on up the Tenn R as far
as Goose Pond. Time forced us to return to Grand River Marina at the top of
the Tenn Tom, just a mile south of the Tenn R on Pickwick Lake. We are
keeping Cinderella there for now, and LOVE the place. That's where Fred
keeps his boat also. You really must cruise the Tenn R...it's great!
Being held over in Fairhope AL completely changed our lives: We have left FL
(well, I have, Gordon still has a condo there) and have bought a house and
now live in Montrose-Fairhope and LOVE it! It's considered one of the top
retirement towns!
There was very little traffic on the Tenn-Tom at that time of the year. It
was HOT but a wonderful trip with much to see and enjoy. Southern
hospitality is all you've heard it is and then some. Prices are much lower
than on the east coast. Demopolis is a good place to leave your boat or haul
it. There is also a boat yard just south of Grand Harbor, The name escapes
me, that has an excellent reputation if you want to haul.
The GL Rendezvous is returning to Joe WheelerState Park again this fall,
hope to see you there!
