Hi All,
First a comment to the list. I strongly support the inclusion of marine
tradesmen. People like Arild are one of the strongest reasons to read this list!
Capt. Mike Maurice is another, people like them know of where they speak!!
Next problem:
I have an antenna mounted on top of my pilot house that had one of the early
Zamak (pot metal) antenna mounts with handle and teeth so angle could be set
as required. The antenna itself was fastened directly to the top part of this
mount. It recently broke off at the bottom of the antenna, the metal broke
not the fiberglass antenna.
Anyone know of a company that makes a replacement mount or fitting with which
I can easily replace this The interesting thing is that the antenna is
currently laying on top of pilot house and the Loran receiver that it services
seems to work just fine! Obviously if I were at the limit of range then I would
have diminshed reception, but it seems to be OK in the local area.
I have been looking at various catalogs and haven't found a way to repair
this, and since this is an older Loran unit it won't be easy to replace the
antenna. There are various antennas on the market that say they are the correct
length for Loran receivers, but I haven't yet gone in that direction as it would
require re-leading the entire antenna cable, no small job aboard this vessel!
Thanks for your comments and help!
Regards,
Capt. Mike Schachter
