I was wondering if there was a service center that can restore it to its =
original lustre?
Thanks in advance for the info.

Charles,
Is yours also a Danforth Constellation (DC), like Kevin's. I too have a
DC (Circa 1983). It's a very nice compass and seems to behave well, but
late last season it started to get a small air bubble. It also has some
crazing where the lens goes into the base. Can you send more info on
Baker-Lyman? Also, if any other Listees have knowledge of a good (and
reasonable) person to send to in the Baltimore/Annapolis area I, and
perhaps Kevin would appreciate it.
Thanks, Mel Knott

usually all you have to do is open the fill plug with the
bubble up to the hole and add compass oil
What do you use for compass oil? I use liquid paraffin, same stuff
as in my oil-lamps (not kerosene). Anyone got better ideas?
Lamp oil is OK -- Baby oil is better .

Some compasses in time from the heat and cold develop an air bubble.if there
is no wet leak usually all you have to do is open the fill plug with the
bubble up to the hole and add compass oil. Check the o-ring for cracks.

My slightly off topic and slightly off color post annoyed at least one TWL
member.
I therefore apologize. I really shouldna. It was funny though.

What do you use for compass oil?
A sail boat shop in Chicago sold a bottle, probably home brew, called compass
oil. I tried mineral oil, way to heavy, . I would think West Marine or the
such would sell something. Maybe a compass manufacturer ?

Depends on the compass manufacturer or last repair facility. Compass cards
are designed to work with a specific viscosity of fluid. Mineral spirits,
kero, light oils, even alcohol (where the term whiskey compass came from)
have been used. Put a card designed for a more viscous solution in a
lighter one and it will never settle. Put a card designed for thin solution
in a thick one and it will be forever spinning around to where it needs to
be.
