What is the experience of Nobeltec users on the board with MaxPro?
As a long time Nobeltec user, I've been pretty darned happy with the
program since its very first release. However, I recently tried an
upgrade from Admiral 9.3 to MaxPro 10.0 and find that some of the
features I came to like are no longer there. Namely:
--Streets and roads
--Chart color palette
--Ability to specify style, size and color of depth fonts
Admittedly, these are minor features, but when one upgrades to the
latest software one expects to gain features, not lose them. Nobeltec
support tells me that some of those are on the "wish list" but cannot
give me any estimate of when, if ever, they may be back.
Max Pro also seems slower to redraw screens using the C-Map vector
charts to me then when I was using Passport vector charts, though I
have not done a time comparison. A friend who also upgraded recently
has found this to be a huge problem, mainly (he believes) because he
has a very large database of waypoints and routes--Nobeltec tells him
they have two engineers working on the problem. I found the same issue
to be a problem with earlier versions, so I make it a practice to
routinely export my waypoints and routes and keep in the program only
those I'll need for the next few months.
I'm just wondering what others have found with Max Pro.
I kept a copy of Admiral 9.3 on my main navigation computer, installed
Max Pro on a separate computer. I'm afraid at this point I see little
to be gained by using Max Pro, so I'm inclined to stick with 9.3 as
something that better fits my needs. Have any of you done the same?
Thanks in advance for any insights you may provide!

I upgraded prior to the formal announcement and have enjoyed the learning
curve you describe. Jeppensen is about to release another service pack (2)
that may correct some of your concerns. Also, sometime soon(???) they will
finally release the Max-Pro that is nmea 2000 compliant which will eliminate
a lot of hardware integration problems if you have mixed talkers/listeners
and install the 2000 backbone. The sounder option is great for fisherman
wanting specific up to date detailed bottom contours for their cruising
ground. That said, I have loaded all the raster charts from noaa with the
raster plus package, however it still won't support any S-57 ENC formats!!!.
The greatest benefit I see is the monthly updates via internet and the great
help guys. They are patient and knowledgeable. The chart update feature is
seamless if you have a connection and access the update directly. The file
request update method (to down load the update to a thumb drive etc to
transfer it to a non internet connect computer) is very hit and miss. The
company is big and has the resources to improve the product which seems to
be an ongoing process. I hope they continue as it has real promise. The
c-amp cartography is very good and is the best available for the Bahamas (so
I've been told). Also the weather function is great if you subscribe and can
receive the satellite.
Bottom line, love it or hate it, my assessment is to use it, as I have
bought it and it meets all of my navigational needs...hence I don't have an
objective or comparative endorsement.

I also upgraded to Max Pro before heading out for the summer in July. I have
a Nobeltec radar, so I'm with their software for the long haul. I'm also a
software product manager, so I understand the types of tradeoffs required to
ship a new release every 12 months.
So, should you go to Max? My answer is a firm "yes". While the feature set is
essentially the same, I notice that stability is substantially improved. I
ran for the whole summer without a single crash. Also, the new charts (which
were free with the upgrade) seem to be excellent, at least for my cruising
area (Pacific NW). I also experimented around with their new user interface
builder, which has a few nice touches but is still a few releases away from
being done.
One of the few downsides I noticed is that it's no longer possible to use
colored 2D bathymetry. The old version allowed you to show a psudo-3D display
using different color bands. It was pretty flaky, and pig-slow when you
zoomed out, and I'm guessing that's why it was dropped.
Finally, my upgrade installer failed, and I had to call tech support. They
were very helpful, but the upshot was that I had to do a full reinstall. This
wiped out all of my saved routes, etc. You might want to back those up before
installing the upgrade.
