Unlike Marius's references, here is the simplified guide for children,
which even I can understand (and there is some code at the end):
https://www.d.umn.edu/~ddunham/umdmath09.pdf

I'm specifically interested in replicating Escher's "circle limit"
drawings, and that's what the link covers. I haven't tried the code.

doug,

I have found a more detailed slide presentation of Prof. Dunham in his page:
DIMACS 2009 Talk (pdf) https://www.d.umn.edu/~ddunham/dundimacs.pdf
Missing details of his algorithm in the previous pdf are found here.

Besides, he has an introduction to hyperbolic geometry and its relation to
Escher work in
Transformation of Hyperbolic Escher Patterns
https://www.d.umn.edu/~ddunham/isis4/index.html

Cool, thanks Ronaldo, both for your OpenSCAD code (which I will try to
build on when I have time) and the links you just posted.
