Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsAh Ha,
Back on track with some posts from Bill and Alan. (I always enjoy Bill's
blogs) I hooked up my chart plotters. The Navionics Lake hot spots do not
cover these lakes (on the Black Warrior), nor does the C map Great Loop chart
of the river systems above Demopolis. But the Topo map on the Lowrance LCX 26
hard drive shows a very good map of the entire lake down to few hundred yard
scale and shows the marinas and facilities along the way.
You can purchased either one of the cheaper Lowrance sounder chart plotters or
even an older chart plotter, and then get the "Create a Map Topo " from
Lowrance I believe that there are 6 CD's for the entire US and the cost is
about $100 (any SD card reader will work for writing to the cards). The
process takes some time to down load to SD or MNC cards, but during this time
you can be planning the trip. I have used the Create a map for many lakes
and the topo features are more than adequate, although not always giving
depths. As Bill pointed out--you have to read the waters and watch where you
go. The other option is to buy topo maps of the area--but it will probably
not have the facilities. I have the Mobile Delta map and that is fine for the
lower river as it comes into Mobile bay. There are water way maps for the run
between Mobile Bay and Orange Beach--and I'll be happy to loan or send you
these.
Good boating!
After Bobbys Fish Camp, there are no more gas stops until Dog River, several
miles south of Mobile.
Winters Marina in BayouCanot /Satsuma closed a few years ago. I was told that
there was somebody
selling gas in Bates Lake, but we couldn't find them, we rode the whole length
of it looking.
One thing you might look into, is being in a pontoon boat you might can go
down Tensaw River, to Eastern Shore Marina. That would put you on the eastern
shore and closer to your destinations.
Tensaw is shallow, but might be doable in a pontoon boat.
