Stamoid is a Swiss made product, the company being owned by the Ferrari Group,
which also makes quite pricey cars. If price is no concern, the heavier
weights are nice fabrics, the lighter ones unsuited to the wind loads of the
tropics. At something like four to six times the price per yard of
Shelter-Rite, I find it very difficult to justify.
Shelter-Rite is available in weights from 10.0 oz. to 22 oz. and reinforced
with both Nylon and polyester scrims. The polyester reinforced fabrics have
less stretch and we use them for enclosures and lace on tops; Nylon for
dodgers and conventional bimini frame tops as it "drapes" better. All of
their fabrics weld exceptionally well and have proven to have a very long life
down here in Paradise.
Make sure anything you buy is sewn with Gore-Tex Tenara thread or an
equivalent extruded Teflon product. Anything else, even the "UV" threads, are
less than two years down here.
We extend the clear vinyl to the edges of our enclosure panels to reinforce
the fasteners around the edges; costs more but keeps the fasteners from
pulling through the material. We also double face everything so you don't see
the mildew which eventually grows between the clear vinyl and the facing
material.
We have found that Venture Tape, the industry standard for double sided seam
tape for use on Sunbrella, doesn't have enough fungicide in the adhesive and
promotes the growth of "mildew". As Sunbrella is a woven fabric and not a
sealed surface, we have had instances where the "mildew" has grown through the
fabric causing permanent and unsightly discoloration. Only apparent on
lighter colors, but an expensive lesson for us; we now use other seamstick for
Sunbrella.
A friend of mine attributes it to the switch from hydrophobic petroleum based
adhesives to hydrophilic water based. He has suggested we look around some of
the world's backwaters for some socially unacceptable product, but we have
developed manufacturing techniques instead.
