Well David, you outshined me as my first bird for the new year was a House Sparrow. Followed by 3 European Starlings. Oh well, the quality should improve when I get out this afternoon! Happy New Year everyone!

Every year I try and make my first
Bird something other than an invasive but normally, it ends up being just
that. This morning I was lucky enough to have Blue Jay be my first bird.
I'll take it.

Happy New Year!

Hard to say what my first bird was because I saw three species all at once
at the feeder. Common Grackles, White-throated Sparrow, and Junco.
Unfortunately the Yellow-headed Blackbird had not been here since the
original sighting.

Mine was Mrs. Northern Flicker.  Some say your first bird of the New Year
is your spirit guide for the year.  Maybe I'll be flickery?  I'll have to
note her traits. I hope she is hard-working, diligent and filled with moral
integrity, for that is my goal for the New Year.

Kathy, they also live on a diet of suet and bugs!

As for me, a couple of Blue Jays chattering grabbed the honor.  (My feeders had been deserted when I first checked.)

Well I am a carnivore.  They eat mainly ants, I think.  I tried chocolate
covered ants once in the 60's.  Not my favorite but everything's better
with chocolate.  I was checking on them and find they are monogamous which
I will have been for 50 years this April 27th.  I also saw they are
described as having attractive plumage and a gentle facial expression.  One
thing I read which did not occur for me was that the male does most of the
feeding of the young.  Not MY experience!
