A few days ago someone on the TWL list asked about info on SABB
engines. I promised to dig it out. However in the meantime I forgot
who wanted it. (Fat-finger-delete-button). Well here is the info and
I hope it will get to the right person. Sorry about the a)delay and
b) the operator's clumsiness (mine) - George, formerly of "The McD"
which was happily SABB powered, and I have stories to tell.....

If you own a Sabb, or know somebody who does, then the following may
be
useful.

I have found that you can quickly get spare parts directly from Bergen
in Norway, but sometimes language differences cause a bit of a
problem.
They speak English, but it is not their first language.  If you do
order
from Bergen, then it is much better to fax your order to them that to
try to call them by phone.  It is pretty hard to get technical advice
from Sabb in Bergen.

A couple of years ago Practical Boatowner (UK) magazine published an
article about how to take care of your Sabb.  The article was based
upon
a series of owner's notes published by Sabb UK (South).  Sabb UK are
distributers of Sabb diesels, they are not a subsidiary of Sabb
proper.
Actually, Sabb UK consists of two 'crusty' mechs who appear to have
worked on Sabb diesels all of their life.  We visited them last year
when we were in England and bought a spare prop and other bits and
pieces from them.

These guys really know the Sabb, and they will give you technical
advice.  They keep a good inventory of Sabb spares, and they have a
machine shop.  They can re-build your Sabb for you if you have wrecked
it.  If you want to sell an old Sabb, then they will buy it from you
and
re-build it - they have a waiting list of people who want ones of
these
beautiful, if somewhat idiosyncratic engines.  They also have a series
of 6 leaflets for Sabb owners that are worth getting (but maybe you
should buy some spares at the time that you ask for the leaflets -
these
guys are not Rockefellers.)  Anyway, the leaflets are:

  1. Water Pumps
  2. Spares Ordering
  3. This one is about the gearbox - I don't have it or its title. as I
    have a vraible pitch
    prop instead of a gearbox.
  4. Starting and Stopping Procedures
  5. Variable Pitch and Sailing Propellers
  6. Fuel Systems

For any particular engine, you will need 5 of these 6 leaflets as one
is
about the variable pitch propeller system and the other is about the
gear-box that is used with the fixed pitch props.

The address of Sabb UK is:

Sabb (UK) South),
Wixenford, Plymstock
Plymouth
UK
PL9 8AA

ph. 01144  1752 402286      fax. 01144 1752 482892

The usual disclaimers apply.  I am just a happy customer.

Cheers,

Don.

George

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but SABB no longer makes anything
except but the 10 HP motor. Just makes me sick. I wanted to buy the
30 HP
last year but Haakon (see below) told me that they couldn't
manufacture
efficiently in the small amounts of engines and make a decent profit.
The
10 HP is still made for lifeboats. If I had some beer, I would cry in
it.

They are now hawking Lister-Petter diesels from the UK.

BTW, if you need parts or a manual, send Haakon an email or give him a
call. He has many great stories about the legendary engine.

I'm trying to find a used 30 HP in Norway. It appears that those who
have
them are hoping that they will become so valuable in the future that
they
can sell them to the Japanese for a kings ransom. You know, sort of
like
that $US40 million Van Gogh.

What was the displacement of your 34 footer ?

Regards

Gene Wunderlin
