Editor's note:
There were several reports of Tree Swallows today.  It is not a
species that gets covered here, but I think we must all be ready for
any sign of impending spring we can find.

From John Marshall:
02/23/14 - Greenwich, Greenwich Point Park -- 11:45 AM; EARED GREBE by
the entrance booth.

From Stefan Martin:
02/23/14 - Greenwich, Greenwich Point Park -- EARED GREBE still
present as of 1:20.  Viewed from the same location.

From Bill Asteriades and Paul Desjardins:
02/23/14 - Enfield, Barnes Boat Launch -- RED-NECKED GREBE (found by
Paul), 26 (by Paul's count) NORTHERN PINTAIL and 2 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS among 14 species of waterfowl.

From Phil Rusch:
02/23/14 - Storrs -- 6 Wilson's Snipe in the wet area between
Hosrebarn Hill Rd and Gurleyville Rd.

From Chris Loscalzo and Marianne Vahey:
02/23/14 - Madison, Hammonasset Beach State Park -- one male
BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE, singing/calling from the top of a tree at the
picnic area by the entrance to Willard's Island.  Also, 12 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS,  resting and feeding on the water by the Meig's Point jetty.

02/23/14 - Hartford, CT river by Riverside Park -- 3 WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS continue.
East Hartford, CT river by Great River Park -- LESSER-BACKED BLACK
GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL and ICELAND GULL continue.
14 Glastonbury, CT river by Community Center -- 4 NORTHERN PINTAILS
and 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS (drake and hen)

02/23/14 - Stratford, Long Beach -- 9:30 AM; Snowy Owl. Looking across
the marsh it was along the edge of one of the creeks. We needed our
scope for a positive id.

From James Sherwonit, CT Audubon EcoTravel group:
02/23/14 - Stratford, Long Beach -- one Snowy Owl in the marsh looking
out toward the airport.
Birdseye St boat ramp -- Snowy Owl directly across the Housatonic
River in the marsh.
Milford, Milford Point, Audubon Coastal Center -- Snowy Owl ound on
the back side of the spit looking from the outer platform.

02/23/14 - Greenwich, Greenwich Point -- Eared Grebe near the ticket
booth, seen from 2:00 to about 3:30 with other birders. Good light and
little wind.

02/23/14 - Madison, Hammonasset Beach State Park -- a Lapland Longspur
in the Nature Center lot around 4:30 PM Sunday (mixed in with the
Horned Lark flock).
